Pinterest: no sensitive-content switch, only tuning

Pinterest offers no sensitive-content or SafeSearch setting for an adult account today. Pinterest removes or limits adult content on its own side; what you can do is remove interests in "Refine your recommendations", tap "See fewer like this" on a Pin, "Report Pin", and block accounts. This is the weakest control on this list.

The honest line

Pinterest has no sensitive-content or SafeSearch toggle for an adult account; its removals and distribution limits happen on Pinterest's side, and what you get is tuning: remove interests, hide, report, block. This is the weakest control on this list.

Who can lock it: No lock. The only passcode Pinterest offers locks account settings for a teen under 18, and it does not filter content.

Availability: Refine your recommendations, See fewer like this, Report Pin and Block work on the web and in the Pinterest app. There is no sensitive-content or SafeSearch setting to find in Settings, Privacy and data, or Account management.

Refine your recommendations

Pinterest's home-feed tuning page. You remove Interests, turn off recommendations based on Pins you looked at, turn off recommendations from specific Boards, and edit who you follow. It shapes what Pinterest guesses you want; it does not filter anything by content type.

Pinterest on the web

  1. Log in to your Pinterest account. Official Pinterest destination (opens in a new tab)
  2. Click the more-options icon at the bottom left, then select "Refine your recommendations". Official Pinterest destination (opens in a new tab)

  3. Open "Interests" and remove topics you no longer wish to see recommendations for.

  4. Open "Activity" and "Boards" to turn off recommendations based on Pins you looked at or on specific boards.

  5. Open "Following" and unfollow accounts or boards that bring the wrong Pins.

Pinterest app (iPhone and Android)

  1. Open the Pinterest app and log in.

  2. Tap your profile picture at the bottom right, then your profile photo at the top left.

  3. Tap "Refine your recommendations". Official Pinterest destination (opens in a new tab)

  4. Tap "Interests", "Pins", "Boards" or "Following" and switch off what brings the wrong Pins.

    Interests removes topics; Pins turns off recommendations based on Pins you looked at; Boards turns off specific boards; Following edits who you follow.

What it covers

  • Recommendations driven by the interests, viewed Pins, boards and follows you switch off
  • Nothing else: Pinterest says these changes "don't impact" the ads on your home feed

What it does not cover

  • It tunes recommendations; it is not a filter, and Pinterest documents no effect on search results
  • Only inputs you name are removed; a new topic Pinterest infers is not caught
  • Ads on your home feed are unchanged

See fewer like this, Report Pin, Block

Per Pin: "See fewer like this" ("See less" in the app) tells Pinterest what you do not want, "Report Pin" sends it for review, and blocking an account keeps that account's content out of your home feed. Each acts on the one Pin or account you name.

  • You see the Pin first, then act; nothing is held back ahead of time

  • A blocked account can still show up in search results and group boards, Pinterest says
  • New accounts and new Pins are not caught

Parental passcode (teens under 18; locks settings, not content)

Pinterest's only passcode is for "a parent or caregiver with a teen under 18". It locks account settings such as email, password, profile visibility, ads personalization, messaging, mentions, comments, shopping and video recommendations. None of these is a content filter, and it expires when the teen turns 18.

A passcode, a supervisor, or DNS keeps the setting from being switched back off in a weak moment.

Pinterest app (teen's account)

  1. Open the Pinterest app and log in to the teen's account.

  2. Tap the profile picture at the bottom right, then the profile picture at the top left, then "Account management".

  3. Tap "Parental passcode", create a four-digit passcode and add your email. Official Pinterest destination (opens in a new tab)

  4. Open the confirmation link in your email within 24 hours to verify.

What it covers

  • Changes to the listed account settings on a teen's account until they turn 18

What it does not cover

  • It does not filter Pins, searches or the home feed; it only locks settings
  • Teens under 18 only; there is no passcode for an adult account
  • Pinterest: "The passcode will expire when your teen turns 18 based on the date of birth in their account."

Pinterest questions

Does Pinterest have a SafeSearch or sensitive-content setting?

No. Pinterest's settings pages (Privacy and data, Account management, Refine your recommendations) list no such switch. Pinterest says it removes or limits the distribution of adult sexual content and nudity itself, and "may apply a sensitivity screen in situations where our systems indicate that content might not be appropriate for all audiences".

What does See fewer like this do?

It tells Pinterest you want fewer Pins like that one; Pinterest says it helps it "understand the kinds of Pins you do or don't want to see". It is a signal, not a filter.

Does blocking someone hide their Pins everywhere?

No. Pinterest says a blocked account's content will not appear in your home feed, but they may still show up in search results and group boards.

Can a passcode lock Pinterest?

Only for a teen under 18, and only account settings such as profile visibility, messaging, comments and video recommendations. It does not filter content, and it expires when the teen turns 18.
