Switching from SHIFT

SHIFT locks your phone down from your computer. On Guard stays out of the way until explicit content appears, and puts one person you chose in your corner. Install On Guard and invite your ally before you unshift.

What changes when you switch

SHIFT is a desktop-controlled app blocker for iPhone, iPad, and Android, with a free content filter. It works by taking access away. On Guard works by catching the moment and bringing someone into it.

On Guard

Your apps
SHIFT: Distracting apps are disabled during a shift, controlled from your Mac or PC.
On Guard: Every app stays usable. Clean content gets nothing, and explicit content gets a gate.
Your schedule
SHIFT: Timed focus sessions cannot be ended early, and scheduled shifts cannot be undone even from your computer.
On Guard: No lockouts and no schedules to live around. On Guard steps in only when explicit content is on your screen.
Who else knows
SHIFT: By their own description, it replaces the blocking job, not the accountability relationship: no one else hears from it.
On Guard: Your ally gets a text if On Guard is uninstalled or signed out, or when adult content is opened.

Three things that change

It works on the feed, not just the moment. When explicit content appears, On Guard puts up a gate, and Move on can do more than close it. On a supported feed (X, Reddit, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube or TikTok, in your browser on Mac or Windows), it offers that platform’s own block or “not interested” in one tap, so the signal goes back to the algorithm that served it. Nothing happens on the platform unless you tap it.

Someone would know if you quit. Your ally gets a text if On Guard is uninstalled or signed out, or if a device goes quiet for 7 days. It is not parental control: you choose your ally, and they never see the site, a screenshot, or your browsing history.

SHIFT says it cannot be disabled or uninstalled while shifted, and that it does not replace reports to another person. On Guard can be removed, and your ally hears when it is.

It stays out of your way. No VPN, no locked-down phone, no schedules to live around. Clean content gets nothing. On Guard steps in only when explicit content is on your screen, and suggestive content gets a short nudge that retires on its own.

SHIFT’s strength is a lockout you cannot talk your way out of. On Guard never locks the phone or holds you to a schedule.

Before you switch

The honest line

SHIFT is stronger at enforcement. If you want a phone you truly cannot unlock in a weak moment, that is what SHIFT is built for, and On Guard is not. On Guard runs no detection of its own on iPhone: it uses Apple’s adult-site filter plus a nudge to move on from the apps you pick.

  • SHIFT’s content filter is free. It blocks known adult sites, stops explicit searches, enforces SafeSearch, and they state its AI scans pages before they reach your screen.
  • Protection for the Mac or PC itself is still listed as in development on their roadmap. On Guard runs its full detection there today.
  • If you rely on a lockout, keep SHIFT until On Guard and your ally are set up, then decide.

Switch without a gap

Do not cancel SHIFT first. Run both for a week so there is never a night with nothing standing guard.

  1. Install On Guard on every device you own.

Mac, Windows, and Android get full detection. iPhone gets Apple’s adult-site filter plus app nudges.

  2. Run the test run on each device.

It shows you what a gate looks like before you ever need one.

  3. Invite your ally.

It can be the same person who is your ally or partner today.

  4. Keep SHIFT running for a week alongside On Guard.

  5. Once On Guard is standing guard on every device, cancel SHIFT.

Cancel through the store or website where you subscribed to SHIFT.

Tell your ally what changes

Your ally is used to one way of hearing from you. A short heads-up keeps the switch from feeling like you are quietly stepping back.

A message you can send

Heads up: I am moving from SHIFT to On Guard. I am not stepping back, just changing tools. You will get an invite link from On Guard, and after that you may get a short text if adult content is opened on my devices, with the app, the device and the time. No screenshots and no browsing history. If one comes, just check in with me.

The promise

Your ally gets a check-in if an adult site is opened on your devices, with the app, the device and the time. No additional details.

Questions

Can I keep SHIFT and add On Guard?

Yes. They do different jobs: SHIFT takes access away, On Guard catches explicit content and brings an ally in. You can run both.

Can I unshift to install On Guard?

That depends on your shift. SHIFT says timed focus sessions cannot be ended early. Install On Guard on your computer first, then on your phone when your shift allows it.

Does On Guard work on my iPhone?

Partly. On Guard runs no detection of its own on iOS: iPhone gets Apple’s adult-site filter plus a nudge to move on from the apps you pick. Full detection runs on Mac, Windows, and Android.
