Snapchat: an adult account has almost nothing to switch

There is no sensitive-content setting for your own adult Snapchat account. The one real filter, "Hide Sensitive Content", lives in Family Center and applies to a teen you are paired with; it trims Stories and Spotlight, and Snapchat says posts still slip through. For yourself you can hide or report a Story, and set who can contact you.

The honest line

An adult Snapchat account has no sensitive-content switch; the only real filter, Hide Sensitive Content, sits in Family Center and applies to a paired teen, so for yourself you are left with hide, report and who-can-reach-me settings.

Who can lock it: No lock for an adult account. For a teen aged 13 to 17, Family Center keeps the Hide Sensitive Content toggle on the parent's side.

Availability: Family Center is in the Snapchat app for a parent aged 18 or older paired with a teen aged 13 to 17, and Snapchat says it "may not be available to you just yet" in every country. The hide, report and privacy settings are in the app for everyone.

Family Center: Hide Sensitive Content

Snapchat's only content filter. In Family Center a parent turns on "Hide Sensitive Content", which "limits sensitive or suggestive content in places like Stories and Spotlight" on the teen's account. It hides posts Snapchat has tagged as sensitive or suggestive; Snapchat: "No filter is perfect, so you may still see some posts slip through."

Snapchat app (parent's phone, teen paired)

  1. Check you both qualify: parents and caregivers 18 and older, teens 13 to 17, each with a Snapchat account. Official Snapchat destination (opens in a new tab)

  2. Add your teen as a friend on Snapchat by searching for their username.

  3. Open Family Center: tap your Profile, tap the gear icon, scroll to "App & Privacy", tap "Family Center". Or type "family" in the search bar. Official Snapchat destination (opens in a new tab)

  5. In Family Center, scroll to "Settings" at the bottom of the page and tap to expand.

What it covers

  • Stories and Spotlight posts Snapchat has tagged as sensitive or suggestive: "images or captions that do not explicitly violate our Community Guidelines yet contain sensitive or suggestive content - for example, references to sexual activity or visual emphasis on certain body parts"

What it does not cover

  • Teen accounts only (13 to 17); an adult cannot turn this on for their own account
  • Snapchat names Stories and Spotlight as the places it limits; nothing it says covers Snaps or Chats between friends

Hide, Report Snap and personalization

For your own account, Snapchat's ranking system learns from what you skip, hide and report: "if you skip, report or hide content, we'll use those as indicators that you don't enjoy the content." Hide and Report are per post; nothing is blocked ahead of time.

A platform-side model decides what counts. Misses are common on suggestive content, and the model changes without notice.

  1. On a Story or Spotlight Snap, press and hold.

  2. Tap "Hide" to see fewer Stories like that, or tap "Report Snap" to send it to Snapchat's safety team. Official Snapchat destination (opens in a new tab)
  3. In Discover or Spotlight, tap "..." then "Why am I seeing this content?" to reach your personalization settings. Official Snapchat destination (opens in a new tab)

  4. In the EEA, the UK or Switzerland only: Settings, then "Personalization Controls" or "Reset Suggested Content".

    Snapchat: "If you live in the European Economic Area, the UK, or in Switzerland you have the option to disable personalized public content recommendations or reset your personalized content feed."

Who Can Contact Me, Who Can View My Story, delete Search History

Snapchat's privacy settings decide who reaches you and who sees you. They do not change what Stories or Spotlight show you, but they cut down what arrives in your Chat.

Works only for what you name. Nothing new is caught until you name it too.

  2. Tap "Who Can Contact Me" and pick who can send you Snaps, Chats and calls.

  3. Tap "Who Can View My Story" and set who sees your Story.

    Snapchat: deleting it "won't keep future ones from being logged".

  • Does nothing about what Stories, Spotlight or Discover show you

Can I turn on Hide Sensitive Content for my own Snapchat account?
